Fans came out in force to watch the St. James’ Saints take on the Stephenville Spartans in game 2 of the high school playoff finals. A loss would put and end to the Saints season.
It was the Spartans that jumped out to a 2-0 lead early in the first putting the Saints back on their heels. They didn’t give up however and managed to tie the game at two at the end of period one.

The start of period two seen the Saints come out firing and a highlight reel goal by Andrew Mercer put the Saints ahead 3-2.
Mercer had a heck of a night for the Saints, spending time both on defence and up front at different times of the game. Mercer isn’t afraid to mix a physical game with a skilled offensive one and it was fun to watch.
Leading 3-2 after the two the Saints came out hungry again and got out to the dreaded two goal lead, considered by many to be the worse lead in hockey. However a last minute empty net goal sealed the deal and the Saints and Spartans are going to a game three decider.
The Saints played a simple, tough to play against game on defense once again led by the underrated Taylor Osmond who was very steady when he was on the ice.
Fans were entertained by a passionate, physical affair at the Bruce II and I’m sure some people will be making the trip to Stephenville early next week to see who wins it all.
