The Port Aux Basques Mariners went into Friday night looking for their first win of the season. Lucas Wiseman made his first start as a Mariner, and Josh White and Ethan MacKay made their season debuts as well.
The Mariner faithful packed the Bruce II yet again and after a Wednesday practice, the team felt confident going into the game. It was a back and forth first period where both Wiseman and Corner Brook Royals starter Ian Woolfrey kept the shooters at bay until finally a rebound found its way to the stick of sniper Clay King and the Mariners were up 1-0.
Royals sniper Matt Colborne tied the game at one shortly afterwards, and that would foreshadow the night to come.
Josh White made it 2-1 late in the first period for the Mariners, then Matt Colborne tied it again, jumping on a loose puck in the slot. White scored twice more for the Mariners and twice more Colbourne answered for the Royals, keeping the game deadlocked heading into overtime, as both players netted hat tricks.
Mariners captain Dylan Savory had a four assist night centering Josh White and Ryan Reid. That line gelled pretty quickly on a team that gets better every time it steps on the ice.
A hole in the ice delayed the game for almost forty five minutes giving the Mariners a chance to rest their lineup as they entered the game with just fourteen skaters.
Kettle scored the other goal for the Mariners but after a valiant effort, and by far the team’s best performance of the season, the team fell on three on three overtime as Freake popped the winner in on what was an old school barn-burner at the Bruce.
The Mariners next home game is this coming Saturday at 7:30 pm against those same Red Wings.
