PORT AUX BASQUES – To a hockey fan, the smell of freshly glistening ice is as familiar, enticing and comforting as a grandmother’s apple pie. That also goes for the sound of skate blades scraping the ice, the snap of a stick against a hard rubber puck, and the cacophony of fans.
The Bruce II Sports Centre had all of these enticements and plenty more as provincial hockey playoffs came to town last week, and along with the players came faithful fans, parents and dignitaries.
There are three provincial hockey tournaments scheduled for this month. First up was the Under 13 Female ‘D’ Provincials.
Play began on Friday, March 31 and concluded on Sunday, April 2. Four teams competed, including the hometown Port aux Basques Blaze. Their rivals were the Goulds Pacers, the Lake Melville Xtreme and the Springdale Braves.
As of press deadline, the medal games had not been played. Be sure to check out our website at wreckhousepress.com, as well as our Facebook, Twitter and YouTube pages for final results.
Next week’s edition will also feature in-depth interviews and more photos!
