
Public Advisory: Repairs Continue on Western Newfoundland Highways Damaged by Heavy Rain
Repairs to highways damaged by flooding and more than 120 mm of rain between February 17 and February 19 began over the weekend. The Department of Transportation and Infrastructure anticipates repairs to be completed on the damaged sections later this week.
Trans-Canada Highway repairs:
· Work continues on culvert replacements at two locations and shoulder repairs at a third location west of Route 490. A detour around the construction sites is available via Routes 490 and 461.
· Crews continue to work in the vicinity of George’s Lake and make progress on repairs to the road shoulder, ditches, and guide rails.
· Work is beginning today on repairs to a sink hole at Little Rapids. The eastbound lanes remain reduced to one lane while work is ongoing.
Route 461 at St. George’s:
· Repairs are underway at multiple washouts. The T’railway is available as an alternate route for essential trips and emergency vehicles.
Route 403 at Flat Bay:
· Work is in progress to replace culverts at multiple locations. Two damaged areas were completed Sunday, allowing impacted residents to have access to emergency services.
Route 404 at McKays:
· A contractor has been engaged to complete repairs. The road remains reduced to one lane with a speed reduction due to a partial washout.
Route 440 at Irishtown:
· The road is open with a lane and speed reduction due to a landslide and staff continue to assess the area.
Route 463 at Mainland:
· A contractor is beginning repairs today, Monday, February 21. The road is open with a lane and speed reduction due to a partial washout.
Department crews continue to monitor and assess infrastructure in the region. Motorists are urged to avoid the areas to allow contractors to complete work as quickly as possible.
