SOUTHWEST COAST – Yet another storm that battered southwest coast last night (Tuesday, Feb. 8) brought winds gust up to 114 kilometres per hour. This resulted in the inevitable loss of power and infrastructure damage.

In Margaree-Fox Roost, downed power poles and wires knocked out power. A loss of power in Channel-Port aux Basques temporarily knocked out the water treatment plant, and in Isle aux Morts the emergency line was also out of service.

According to the Newfoundland Power Outage Centre, most communities were impacted.

In Margaree-Fox Roost, Port aux Basques (Caribou Road and Grand Bay West), the severe weather conditions impacted 158 customers. It is estimated that power will be restored by Thursday, Feb. 10 at 2:00 p.m.

In Isle aux Morts, 100 customers were affected by the storm, with power estimated to be restored by Feb. 9 at 3:00 p.m.

In Burnt Islands, 254 customers were affected, with power estimated to be restored by Feb. 9 at 3:00 p.m.

Katie Hatfield stated on behalf of Bell Aliant that they were unaware of any impact to their services.

“We are not seeing any service interruptions to customers as a result of the storm. We are aware that some customers in the Margaree area are without power, and once power is restored, we’ll do a health check on our systems to ensure there are no impacts to Internet service as a result.”
