PORT AUX BASQUES — Mya McNeil, age 10, represented the Bruce II Bowling Team in St. John’s at the provincial tournament on Nov 20. McNeil played in the Bantam Female Singles, which includes girls 8 to 10 years old, and brought home the gold medal.

McNeil keeps her skills sharp by bowling once a week with her team. She decided to give the sport a try after she saw how much fun it could be.

“It looked like fun, so I joined and liked it. Also, my Poppy Morgan used to be in bowling when he was little, so it made me want to join too,” said McNeil.

She did not find it hard to pick up the sport.

“I love getting strikes and seeing my friends,” said McNeil.

She has been bowling now for five years, and she said that getting her first strike remains a memorable experience.

“I felt so happy,” said McNeil.

She was delighted when she found out that she would be competing in the provincial tournament.

“I was happy and excited,” said McNeil.

Her family was proud to watch her compete to victory during the tournament.

“They all screamed and cheered, and my dad squeezed me so tight,” said McNeil.

McNeil already has her sights set on competing in next year’s tournament.

“I hope so.”
